Ready to make something this summer? Let’s go! Summer Media Camp is the perfect way for your children to explore something new, express their creativity, and experiment with technology. Working under the guidance of specially trained artists and educators, your child will collaborate with other children to create original movies, animated films, and video games, which will then be featured as part of a special showcase at the Museum. All levels of experience are welcome. Each child will leave camp with the confidence and knowledge that they made something awesome!

This summer, Museum of the Moving Image will hold its popular media camps in person at the Museum July 12–August 20, and online July 26–August 20. Registration for both is open now. Learn more below.

On-Site Summer Media Camp

Dates: July 12–August 20
Hours: Monday–Friday, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (with options for early/after care)
Ages: 8–14
Location: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35 Ave, Astoria, NY 11106
Fees: $550 per weeklong session, with discounts for multiple. $45 registration fee (waived for MoMI members).

Programs vary week to week, and sessions can be taken independently or in any combination. All levels of experience are welcome. Your child will receive an abundance of personalized attention in a safe environment: The average child-to-teacher ratio is 7:1, and students sit 6 feet apart and follow museum-wide safety protocols, which include regular sanitizing of rooms, high-quality ventilation, and socially distancing in all galleries and spaces. All campers, staff, and Museum visitors must wear masks. Summer Media Camp takes place in the digital learning suite, where, upgraded air filters have been installed.

Sessions

Next Generation Animators

July 12–16
Discover how you can use stop-motion animation to make everyday objects come to life on screen. Working with computers, tablets, cameras, and crafts, children will work in small production teams to develop, direct, and film their own original animated movies.

Digital Game Designers

July 19–23
Campers will immerse themselves in digital game design, and explore what makes their favorite video games fun. They’ll remix classic video games by creating new levels, rules, and characters, while getting exclusive access to the Museum’s collection of video games during days when the galleries are closed to the public.

Indie Game Makers

July 26–30
Campers will explore the process behind digital game-making, tackle fun design challenges, meet professional game developers, and experiment with game design tools to create original video games inspired by the world of independent video games.

Future Filmmakers

August 2–6
Learn how movies are made while exploring the Museum’s collections in a week packed with hands-on video-making experiences. Kids will collaborate in small production teams to create an original silent film that they will write, direct, produce, and star in.

Claymation Creators

August 9–13
Aspiring animators will explore the delightful process of claymation (clay animation) as they learn the techniques necessary to make their own films. Campers will design and create their own sets, props, and characters to animate their own original claymation film.

Puppet TV

August 16–20
Led by a professional puppeteer who has been featured on popular television shows, campers will design their own character, experimenting with a variety of styles and materials, which they then use to produce an original sketch. Drawing inspiration from the Museum’s Jim Henson Exhibition, they’ll learn about the art of televised puppetry.

Virtual Summer Media Camp

Dates: July 26–August 20, 2021
Hours: Monday–Friday, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. ET
Ages: 8–14
Location: Join online from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
Fees: $150 per week. $45 registration fee (waived for MoMI members).

For those outside the New York City area and/or for those who are more comfortable with the virtual setting, the Museum will be offering two weeks of online Summer Media Camp. Each camp meets Monday–Friday for two hours per day, starting at 10:00 a.m. ET. Youth ages 8–14 who live in NYC and anywhere around the world are welcome to join! Sessions are conducted via secure Zoom link.

Future Screenwriters

July 26–30
Learn the art of screenwriting and develop your very own treatment and movie trailer. Through fun, creative writing, and filmmaking exercises, campers will learn how to write and pitch their original movie or video game ideas.

RPG Game Designers

August 2–6
Discover how to design the best new stories for video games through the world of role-play games. Learn the art of creative world-building by combining interactive theater, game mechanics, and character design. Each camper will create their own unique RPG game.

Registration and Payment

Registration is now open for all. Please use this form to sign up.
After applying, you will receive additional information in order to complete registration.

Registration fee (non-refundable): $45 (waived for Museum members). Fee applies once per family. Consider becoming a Museum member. Learn more about benefits and join here.

Parents will receive an email confirmation of the selected workshops. Please submit a separate registration form for each child if there are multiple children from the household participating in the camp. Placement in the camp is not guaranteed until full payment is received. Space is limited; early registration is recommended. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Summer Media Camp is for kids ages 8–14. Sessions are grouped by age when possible: 8–11 year olds are grouped together in one class, 12–14 year olds in another class.

If a session is filled, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted if space becomes available. Pending availability, registrations will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. the Wednesday before a session begins; the Museum cannot guarantee that registration requests received after this deadline can be accommodated.

Full payment, payable by check or credit card, is due three weeks prior to the start of the session. To receive a refund, cancellations must be made at least three weeks prior to the start of the session. If Museum of the Moving Image cancels a session for any reason, all enrollment and registration fees will be refunded.
