Dir. Jerry Rothwell. United States/United Kingdom, 2020, 82 mins. Based on the best-selling memoir by Naoki Higashida, The Reason I Jump is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity through the experiences of non-speaking autistic people from around the world. Higashida's revelatory insights—narrated by actor Jordan O'Donegan—help illustrate the film’s intimate portraits of five remarkable young people. The documentary opens a window for audiences into an intense, overwhelming, but often joyful, sensory universe. Higashida’s writing reflects on what his autism means to him and others, his personal perception of the world, and why he acts the way he does. The film distills these elements into a visceral experience that leads us to Higashida’s core message: not being able to speak does not mean one has nothing to say. A Kino Lorber release.
