Dir. Elizabeth Lo. U.S. 2020, 73 mins. Working as her own cinematographer, director Elizabeth Lo eloquently captures the perspectives of three stray dogs searching for food and shelter on the streets of Istanbul, exploring what it means to live as a being without status or security. Zeytin, fiercely independent, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night; Nazar, nurturing and protective, easily befriends the humans around her; while Kartal, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. These dogs’ disparate lives intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians. Stray is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing. Winner of Best International Feature Documentary at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. View trailer.
