Dir. Chloé Galibert-Laîné and Kevin B. Lee. Germany. 2020, 77 mins. Desktop essayists Galibert-Laîné and Lee conduct an epistolary inquiry into propaganda videos by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, at once attempting to reconstitute the lived experience of the self-proclaimed caliphate’s prisoners and recruits and deconstruct the videos’ inflammatory rhetoric within the lineage of documentary film. What for Lee prompts a film historical meditation on the production and transference of fascist logic into exchangeable symbols and tropes, for Galibert-Laîné sparks an urgent investigation into the personal stories of radicalization and self-annihilation these reified figures of cinematic speech just barely conceal. New York premiere
